It's not free, not a cheap way to attract audience, it really servs the immersion and links to the story. It's very dark also (well, the correct word would be "glauque" in french, if anyone have a translation ?), and no censorship so, prostitute, peep show, sex shop, snuff. It's amazingly well written, NPC are memorable (Ahhhh the two sisters ! Please everyone, no spoil to what happens with them), even if you don't know the Vampire lore, or if you don't really like (as I do) vampiric lores in general, the city of LA is so. I don't want to spoil too much, but there is a bunch of different ambiance, themes and gameplay available, and it's never very long each time, so if there is a specific kind of gameplay/ambiance/theme you don't like, you know it will be short.īut focusing on the RPG element, since the game is mainly an RPG. You want infiltration MGS-style of gameplay ? you got it. In two flavours : the mysterious "I fear the worst but it only fuel my imagination without showing much" lovecraft-style ambiance (silent-hillish if you prefer), and the creepy "Help I'm attacked by swarms of ever-respawning zombies and I'm running out of ammo" resident evilish ambiance. it doesn't feature turn based combat, but to me RPG is more a matter of "choices and consequences" than a matter of combat system), it also features other non traditionally RPG element and it's good at it ! You want survival-horror with a strong creepy ambiance ? You got it. Not only it is an EXCELLENT RPG (well, depends on your definition of RPG. And it's not every day I don't only mumble about how 2D looks so much better when I'm speaking of a 3D game. Look for my bloodlines review in the review topic sometime (early) next year. As I have a more than valid reason to need a new one of those, I'll just be sure to get a gaming one while I'm at it. I may not be able to upgrade my comp for a while, but my laptop exploded. I bought this recently, but can't really run memory leak source on my comp. It ain't exactly Half-Life, but it doesn't go close to the true pits of mediocrity that Hellgate London resides in. In retrospect, I don't even think the shooter elements were as bad as their reputation. It's a shame that the filler content contrasts so much against the "made with love" bits that it becomes glaringly obvious. in short, it has all the makings of a great game. It has the best "virtual actor" interaction I've seen, excellent writing, good quest design, the Ocean House Hotel, a great spread of useful skills. Like everyone else, I went with just shy of great.
